Researchers used music from Billboard´s top 100 to patients with acquired brain injuries that lead to loss of memory.
After playing the bits of music, they asked the people to say how familiar the music was to them and what memories it brought.
The result was that when a song evoked some memory, people rated them as more familiar as well.
So, they suggest that music can be of great help to people that lost memory due to brain injury.
This makes sense as well. We know that memories are made of associations and are not stored on a single place or cell in our brain. By playing music that would be related to some personal event, that could help the patient to recollect it.
